The Michigan Junior Masters Association rolled into Galaxy Lanes in Grand Blanc, Michigan this past weekend and 120 bowlers filled the 40 lanes all vying for a MJMA title and their share of the scholarship points that was to be awarded. Brooke Wood (Davison, MI) and Nick Cooper (Clarkston, MI) stood on top the mountain at the end of the day and each earned their first MJMA titles with hard fought victories.

In the first match it was Brooke Wood taking charge early while Stephanie Lavely (Clarkston, MI) was having a hard time trying to carry the corner pins. Wood advance with a 210-170 win. In the second match Wood continued to jump out early lead with a four-bagger while two time champion, Sydney Brummett (Fort Wayne, IN) was having a little trouble with her ball reaction. Wood wins 214-164.

In the semi-finals Wood took charge early, once again, and cruised to a win over Chelsey Purdum (Wyoming, MI), 243-176. In the finals, tournament leader Chyanne Hibbs (Lapeer, MI) swapped frame for frame with Wood until she opened in the ninth which forced Wood to throw the first strike in the tenth to win, taking her first MJMA title 220-216.

The guy’s side saw four non-winners in the step-ladders along with six time champion Tylor Greene (Davison, MI). In the first match it was DJ Rose (Cottam, ONT) starting out strong against Jalen White (Lansing, MI) with a 213-156 win. Jalen also had the high game of the tournament by shooting 300 in the 6th game of match play.

In the second match Rose was in a tough battle with Greene with both of them trading blows the whole way through until the tenth frame when Rose needed to throw the first strike to move on to the semi-finals but a solid 10 pin stood in the way. Greene wins the match 216-214.

In the semi-finals, Greene was going to have another tough match against Casey Shephard (Portage, MI) but with a couple of miscues from Greene and Shephard throwing the last seven strikes he would win 249-185, setting up the final match between two bowlers looking for their first MJMA title.

In the finals, Nick Cooper (Clarkston, MI) was awaiting his challenger and started out with a couple breaks to throw a three bagger and showed why he led the guy’s side through the match play portion. Cooper wins 244-212 to claim his first MJMA title.

We also awarded two more Junior Gold spots for the National Tournament being held in Detroit this July. Kasey Eaton and Jeremy Jackson both received their spots and will represent MJMA at the tournament.
