GAINOR AND WINTERS CLAIM PLYMOUTH TITLES

The Michigan Junior Masters Association held it 9th Annual Greater Plymouth Open on August 29-30, 2015 at the friendly confines of Plaza Lanes. As always, the entire staff made us feel welcome and gave us control of the lane machine. The 42 foot sport pattern seemed a good test for our members and a number of them rose to the challenge to post some very good scores.

Alex Ouellette (Linwood, MI) led the way on the guy’s side with a nice eight game total of 1686 with Dylin Hunter (Windsor, Ont Canada) coming in a close second with 1669. The ladies were led by Brooklyn Greene (Davison, MI) with a 1499 score.

The top eight ladies and twelve guys faced off in match-play on Sunday morning and a couple of significant moves changed the look of the guys stepladder look. Kyle Lewis (Lansing, MI) and Antar Howard (Kalamazoo, MI) made the run from 7th and 8th respectively to make the top five. Ryan Winters (Livonia, MI), Dylin Hunter and Marcus McClain (Lincoln Park, MI) rounded out the top five.

Lewis and McClain, two of our youngest competitors, faced off in round one with Lewis pulling off a 228-171 win. Lewis then topped our Canadian entry, Dylin Hunter, in the next match 181-168 to move on to the semi-finals. Lewis found the going a little tougher there as Howard, who was looking for his second MJMA title, rolled to a 204-177 win. Howard, however, would have to wait for his next title and Ryan Winters claimed the title from the top spot with a 181-163 win. This was Winters’ second win in a row and his fourth overall in MJMA.

On the ladies side, the final four had all won titles previously, including our winner from our first event, Meghan Macunovich (Canton, MI). However three others were looking for their chance to come away with the title and in the first match, Samantha Gainor (Chesterfield, MI) squared off against Noelle Scheuer (Casco, MI). Gainor showed the form that gave her a 6-2-0 record in match-play as she rolled out to a 183-168 win.

Gainor continued her ride up the stepladders in match two as she defeated Brooklyn Greene 213-187 to set up the finals match against Macunovich. In a very tight match that saw the title come down to the 10th frame, it was Gainor hanging on for the 162-158 win and her second MJMA title.

Junior Gold qualifiers were also given their spots for the 2016 IBC Youth Junior Gold Championships as Samantha Gainor and Kyle Lewis will represent MJMA at next year’s event.

We also kicked off our annual Cookie Dough fund raiser and this year we are hoping to see everyone bring in at least 10 tubs with their orders that are due at the event in Jackson on October 24-25th. Order will be delivered at the event in Lansing on November 14th, just in time for holiday cookie making. The cookie dough and popcorn make nice holiday gifts for those looking to thank a favorite teacher or mailman.

Our next event is the annual stop at Century Bowl in Waterford, Michigan. Qualifying will begin on Saturday, September 19th at 12:00PM with match play starting at 9:00AM on Sunday, September 20th. Entries can be found on the website at www.mjma.net. Should you have any questions, please contact Jerry Tarabek at (616) 780-2095 or email at mjma@wowway.com.
