Davis and Kersten Take Wins Home From Clarkston

The Michigan Junior Masters Association rolled into the place where it all began 30 years ago, Cherry Hill Lanes North in Clakston for the Annual Klaczkiewicz Memorial Open. The Brunswick Rhino patter, shortened to 34 feet, proved to be not much of a challenge to our members as the top ten guys averaged over 200 for the eight-game qualifier. Tournament leader Alex Ouellette (Linwood, MI) shot a very impressive 1836 to lead all bowlers while Meghan Macunovich (Canton, MI) led the way for the ladies with a nice 1585 for her eight-game qualifier.

Sunday’s matchplay did not slow things down either as big games were shot all through the six or eight games. Sierra Howes (Corunna, MI) shot an impressive 277 to take over the girls top score while Ryan Winter’s (Livonia, MI) 289 from qualifying held up until Ouellette shot the same score in the final matchplay game.

The Sunday matchplay was as high scoring as qualifying as seven of the eight guys finished matchplay averaging over 200, including Ouellette who averaged an impressive 232 for the 16 games. Ouellette led the guys side going into stepladders and he was joined by Jacob Kersten (Clarkston, MI), Sam Brandt (Fremont, MI) and Chase Kaufman (Swartz Creek, MI) Kaufman and Brandt faced off in the first match and it was Brandt who took control in the fifth frame by throwing the next eight strikes to win 268-205. Match two was a bit different as Brandt struggled to find the same carry he had in game one and Kersten stayed even through the match. The match was decided in the tenth as Kersten carried the nine pins he needed to secure the win and advance to the finals 189-185.

The finals saw things go back and forth and was even after five frames. Ouellette threw the first double in the match in the 6th and 7th frames but it was Kersten who took control after that by throwing a five-bagger to close out the game and his first MJMA title 228-206.

The ladies saw Taylor Davis (Burton, MI) face off against Meghan Macunovich (Canton, MI) in match one. Macunovich had struggled a bit the last couple of match play games but showed little of that as she started with five strikes in the first eight frames. However, Davis started a streak of her own in the 5th frame and continued until the tenth when she posted a 214 score. Macunovich needed all three strikes in the tenth to force a tie but her second shot failed to carry ten and Davis took the win 214-203 to advance to the finals.

In the finals, davis matched up against Sierra Howes (Corunna, MI) whao had moved up from third in matchplay to gain the top spot. Davis started strong with strikes in fove of the first seven frames while Howes had early carry problems. Davis had a slight lead going into the ninth and was able to hold on to it and run the table to gain her fourth MJMA title 205-178 over Howes.

We also handed out two more Junior Gold spots for the national event to be held in Indianapolis next July. Alex Ouellette and Sierra Howes each punched their ticket for the event and will represent MJMA in the tournament.

Even though the field turnout was a bit dissapointing, the competition level was very high. The event once again showed why MJMA members are regarded as some of the best bowlers in the country, especially when it comes to bowling on tougher patterns. The Brunswick based pattern has challenged many of the professional that bowl on it but our members showed that they can bowl pretty much on anything as they tore up the lanes with the field average being the highest of our four event so far this season.

Our next event will be on October 24th and 25th at Airport Lanes in Jackson, Michigan. The event has room for up to 180 bowlers so I am hoping for a great turn out as we will have added scholarship money for the event. Qualifying on Saturday will begin at 12:00PM, check-in starts at 10:30AM, with the Sunday matchplay starting at 9:00AM. Please get your entries in early, they can be found on the website at www.mjma.net.

Look forward to seeing everyone in Jackson as this will be our final singles event before the break for the High School season. Only the annual Adult-Junior event in November will take place prior to taking the break until March. If you need an adult partner for the event, please contact us as we normally have both male and female adults looking for youth partners for this very highly anticipated event.
