INAUGURAL RICHFIELD OPEN CROWNS REPEAT CHAMPIONS

The Michigan Junior Masters Association initiated a new center into the mix with this years Flint area tournament. Richfield Bowl in Richfield, MI stepped in when Sunnybrook Lanes closed suddenly back in September to host their first event. Jim Teuber and his staff did a wonderful job getting the 102 bowlers feeling somewhat comfortable, considering the very tough 39 foot pattern they were bowling on.

Trevor Morgan (Kalamazoo, MI) and Julia Huren (Westland, MI) set the pace in qualifying as they led their divisions with 1587 and 1525 scores respectively. The scoring pace got considerably more challenging from there however as to the top 24 boys and top 8 girls dropped to one of the lowest scoring levels in recent history.

Sunday was another day however and the 30 bowlers that were left in match play did their best to master the conditions. After the 12 games of match play, Ryan Winters (Livonia, MI) rose to the top of the ladder for the boys and grabbed the number one spot for their stepladders. Joining Winters was Kyle McGrath (Davison, MI), jacob Kerste (Clarkston, MI), Sam Brandt (Fremont, MI) and Zach Brandt (Kalamazoo, MI).

Brandt and Brandt faced off in game one and Zach got the better of Sam 202-191 to advance to face Kersten. Kersten ended Brandt’s day however in the next match taking a 213-190 win into the semi-finals against McGrath. In what proved to be the highest scoring match of the step ladders, it was Kersten taking another victory and advancing to the finals with a 269-235 victory over McGrath. In the finals though, it was Winters turn to end the day for Kersten as he found the striking he needed to earn a 213-166 win and his seventh MJMA title.

With the ladies, Huren continued her roll and took the top spot for the stepladders after the match-play rounds. Imari Blond (Flint, MI), Meghan Macunovich (Canton, MI) and Samantha Knight (Richland, MI) all joined Huren in the finals. The first match was a bit of a challenge for both Knight and Macunovich but in the end it was Knight taking a 153-124 win to advance against Blond in the semi-finals. Knight continued her run up the ladder in that match as she squeaked out a 207-201 win to earn her finals spot against Huren. The finals match was tight as both ladies showed they wanted this title. IN the end though it was Huren getting the key marks she needed, when she needed them, to earn her second MJMA title. We also crowned two new Junior Gold participants as Zachary Brandt (Kalamazoo, MI) and Olivia Hoeksema (Zeeland, MI) earned the ticket to represent MJMA in the July event in Indianapolis.

Congratulations to our winners and we look forward to seeing everyone in a couple of weeks in Kalamazoo at Pinz of Kalamazoo for the one-day event on Saturday, April 2nd. We will open check-in at 7:30AM with bowling starting at 9:00AM. We are limited to the first 96 entries so get them in early please.
