MCCLAIN AND GAINOR GLOW AT CANDLELITE BOWL

The 21st annual Candlelite Classic proved to be another tough test for the Michigan Junior Masters Association members. The 43 foot oil pattern challenged everyone again and add the guardian surface they also have to contend with, the scoring pace was challenged from start to finish.

After the six games of qualifying, Marcus McClain (Lincoln Park, MI) and Taylor Davis (Burton, MI) led the way shooting 1232 and 1169 respectively. As we advanced to the matchplay portion, twelve boys and 8 girls looked forward to the two game total pins elimination rounds.

For the guys, the higher seeded bowlers all won in round one and followed suit in round two as we ended up with the top four qualifiers in the semi‐final round. McClain faced off against #4 seed Jon Niemiec (Bay City, MI) and continued to impress as he had all day by defeating Niemiec 415‐348. In the other semi‐final it was #2 seed Ryan Winters (Livonia, MI) facing #3 seed Conner Weber (Wayne, MI). Winters continued the trend of the higher seeds advancing as he defeated Weber 406‐368.

McClain and Winters faced off in the finals and McClain did not seem intimidated by the seven time MJMA winner as he finished the trend of top seeds winning matches as he rolled up a 464 – 401 finals victory to earn his very first MJMA title.

The ladies side of the event was a very different story however. In the first round, two of the higher seeded bowlers were eliminated in their forst matches as #6 seed Madchen Breen (Warren, MI) and #7 seed Julia Huren (Westland, MI) won their matches to advance to the semi‐finals. Breen and Huren faced off against each other with Breen winning a very close match 366‐333. The other semi‐finals saw #1 seed Davis fall to the #4 seed Samantha Gainor (Chesterfield, MI) 387‐324.

In the finals, Breen and Gainor went back and forth through out the two games but it was Gainor who was able to throw the strikes she needed, when she needed them to take home her third MJMA title with a 371‐355 victory over Breen.
