RICHARDS MAKES HER RETURN TO MJMA WITH A WIN IN GRAND BLANC

Jordan Richard (Tecumseh, MI) made her return to Michigan Junior Masters from college at the 25th Annual Greater Grand Blanc Open. After being gone from competition for some time she picked right where she left of by winning her 16th MJMA title. It was not easy though as the rest of the field was trying to make their own mark as well.

Julia Huren (Westland, MI) led the ladies qualifying round with a very nice 1285 for her six games. The top eight ladies then went into two game, total pins, single elimination bracket play. The first round saw two of the top seeds upset as #2 seed Makayla Lancioni (New Hudson, MI) and #3 seed Imari Blond (Flint, MI) both were upset. Huren and Richard both advanced as well and would face each other in round two.

In round two, both the higher seeds failed to advance as #6 seed Rebecka Iverson (Clio, MI) fell to #7 seed Samantha Gainor (Chesterfield, MI) and our #1 seed, Huren, fell to the #4 seed Richard. In the finals Richard and Gainor posted the highest scoring match of the day for the ladies but Gainor fell just short of her second title of the season as Richard posted a 432-414 victory for her 16th title.

On the guys side, Familiar faces dotted the top of the leader board after qualifying with Alex Ouellette (Linwood, MI) leading the way with a 1340 six game total. In all, 16 guys’ made the cut to bracket play and all 16 score 1208 or higher which was the best scoring qualifying round we have seen in quite a while. In match play round one, the upsets continues as only three of the higher seeds advanced to round two and only one of the higher seeds made it out of round two to the semi-finals.

In the semi-finals, only #5 seed Tyler Scott (Saginaw, MI), who knocked out #4 seed Marcus McClain (Lincoln Park, MI) and #6 seed Ryan Winters (Livonia, MI) were left out of the top eight qualifiers. Winters advanced to the finals by beating #15 seed Shane Barthlow (Chesterfield, MI) 458-391 but Scott was not as fortunate as #16 seed Chase Kaufman (Swartz Creek, MI) advanced to the finals with a 430-418 victory. Kaufman was making a nice run up the brackets by beating the #1 seed Ouellette in round one, #9 seed Dylin Hunter (Windsor, Ont.) and the Scott in the semi-finals. In the finals it was Winters, who is an a mission to match one of the best winning season’s in MJMA history, who took control and outscored Kaufman 450-418 to take home his 8th MJMA title.
