The final regular season event for the 2015‐16 Michigan Junior Masters Association season took place at Spectrum Lanes in Wyoming, Michigan on May 14th & 15th. A smaller field of 72 bowlers came from all over the state to compete on the 42 foot sport pattern and try to earn a banner and their share of the scholarship opportunities.

The scoring pace was a bit better this weekend as the ol volume and surface match up seemed to be a bit better for our bowlers. The scores sure proved that out as the top qualifiers after the eight game block marched well above the 200 average mark with Marcus McClain (Lincoln Park, MI) leading the way with a nice 1747 score but Ryan Winters (Livonia, MI) was right behind with 1746. In all, the top five bowlers on the guy’s side averaged over 200 for the qualifying round. The ladies were led by homegrown favorite Kasey Eaton (Wyoming, MI) when she tallied 1573 for her qualifying round.

Sunday saw match-play really shake up the standing though. Jordan Richard (Tecumseh, MI) took over the top spot for the ladies after going 6‐1‐1 in match-play. Taylor Davis (Burton, MI) jumped from third to second, Haley Richard (Tecumseh, MI) fourth to third and Julia Huren (Westland,MI) from sixth to fourth to round out the stepladder finals.

In round one, Huren faced off against Haley Richard and when she opened with an early four‐bagger, she built a 40+ pins lead that she never relinquished as she defeated Richard and moved into the semi‐finals 219‐169. Huren again started strong in match two against Davis but Davis stayed the course and brought the match down to the tenth frame where Huren got the spare she needed and stepped into the finals with a 195‐187 win.

Hurem would now face off against the other Richard sister and this one started like no one wanted to lose. Both ladies had 5 strikes in the first six frames but Richard ran into a mess with a missed spare in the tenth to open the door for Huren, and she confidently swung that door open with a double in the tenth to win the match 233‐211 and win her third MJMA title.

The guy’s had their share of jumping around as well. Going into the last position round game of match-play, five bowlers were basically vying for two spots in the stepladders. When the dust settled, Ryan Winters was atop the group closely followed by Sam Brandt (Fremont, MI), David Northouse (Byron Center, MI), Jacob Kersten (Clarkston, MI) and Zachary Brandt (Kalamazoo, MI) who shot a 254 the last game to jump into the fifth position.

As the stepladders began, Zach Brandt looked like he was going to be around for a while as he started with strikes in five of the first seven frames to open up a large lead that Kersten just could not do anything with as Brandt advanced to the next match with a 237‐175 win. Match two saw Northouse start fast as he built a small lead after five frames but Brandt was hanging tough and when he threw a three-bagger late, he took a 10 pin lead in the ninth. Northouse was not done yet though and with strikes in the 9th, 10th and 11th frames he was able to pull out a 245‐223 win and advance to the semi‐finals.

Sam Brandt was ready and waiting for Northouse and showed it by throwing the front nine strikes and not giving Northouse any room to challenge the game. Brandt could not fill out the tenth in an attempt for a 300 game but managed to come through with a 275‐22 win to move into the finals.

The finals started a little slow for both bowlers as it was not until Brandt threw a double in the 5th and 6th frames did anyone take any kind of advantage. That double though looked to fire up Winters as he proceeded to throw seven strikes in a row to close out the match and his 8th MJMA title with a 239‐235 win. Junior Gold participants were also crowned at the event as Lauren McKowen (Tecumseh, MI) and William Holmes (Southfield, MI) earned their spots for the national tournament in July in Indianapolis.

The Daniel C Ottman Memorial Championships are next on the agenda. We will be sending out the invitations to those 53 qualifiers for this years event that will be held at the Monroe Sport Center on June 10, 11 & 12th in Monroe, Michigan. This annual event caps our season and crowns the best of the best for the year. We will also host the annual awards presentation on Friday evening beginning at 6:00PM with qualifying starting right after the completion of the ceremony, roughly 7:00PM. Please make sure the entries are returned as soon as possible so we can lock down the roster and the scholarship opportunity amounts, should be in the $15,000.00 area this season.

Lastly, I want to thank all the Board members and everyone else who stepped up again this season to make it the season it was. We will be saying good bye to some folks this year including Stephen Krywy, a board member for the past 5 years and our main administrative person. Stephen is moving on to other endeavors and we wish him the very best for years to come. Thank you for everything you contributed, you will be missed.
