Alex Ouellette (Linwood, MI) and Samantha Gainor (Chesterfield, MI) took home the U20 titles at the recently completed Michigan Junior Masters Association’s Sagano Richfield Open. It was the fifth title for Ouellette who led from qualifying throgh matchplay and into the step ladder finals where he defeated Marcus McClain (Lincoln Park, MI) 167-165 on the very demanding Sport pattern.

McClain had reached the finals by winning two matches in the stepladders defeating Antar Howard (Kalamazoo, MI) 177-168 and Cody Johnson (Sandusky, MI) 188-133. Johnson had won the first step ladder match knocking out Justin O’Shaughnessy in the very first match on a one ball roll off after tieing the match at 177. Ouellette was the only bowler in the field to average 200 for the event and his 220.5 for the 20 games was 25 pins better than the second average in the field showing how well he handled the tough conditions.

Gainor qualified fifth on Saturdays eight game outing but figured something out for the Sunday match play as she went 6-2-0 and earned the 180 bonus pins that allowed her to overtake the top seed Taylor Davis (Burton, MI) by 105 pins going into stepladders. Kalee Johnson (Davison, MI) was not about to hand things over to either Davis or Gainor as she won the first two step ladder matches taking out Meghan Macunovich (Canton, MI) 196-175 and then ousted Davis 222-175 before reaching the finals against Gainor.

Johnsons run ended there however as she struggled on the shot as it was breaking down further and allowed Gainor to earn her fourth MJMA title with a 179-132 victory. Johnson and Ouellette both earned their Junior Gold spots from the event and will represent MJMA in Cleveland at the National Tournament in July.

In the U15 division, we crowned a new girls champion as Samantha Lawson (Lansing, MI) took home her very first MJMA title by knocking off two-time U15 title holder Emilea Sturck (Flint, MI) in the finals 171-165. Sturck had reached the finals by winning her first match against katelyn Epperson (Ypsilanti, MI) 194-131. On the guy’s side, Cameron Klein (Taylor, MI) won his second straight MJMA U15 title by defeating Bradley Folks (Belleville, MI) in the finals 158-130. Both Klein and Sturck earned Junior Gold spots as well from the event and will be part of the MJMA representatives in Cleveland as well.

The next event will be Saturday, October 22nd at Airport Lanes in Jackson, Michigan. This will be a one-day event with practice starting at 9:30AM for the qualifying round of 6 games. Match play will follow approximately 30 minutes after qualifying scores are verified and those making the cut will bowl in a twogame, total pins, single elimination bracket format. Entries will determine the number of bowlers moving to match play so let’s make sure we have a good turnout for the event.

Cookie dough fundraiser forms and money are also due in Jackson. Please remember to bring your completed forms and funds to the tournament office when you check in. Orders will be delivered at the Adult Junior event in Lansing on November 12th. If you need additional forms look to the website and you can download the as many form as you need.
