OUELLETTE WINS AGAIN IN JACKSON
Alex Ouellette continued his stranglehold on the U20 Boys division of Michigan Junior Masters Association with yet another tournament win at Airport Lanes in Jackson, Michigan. This makes three straight tournament wins for Ouellette who is distancing himself from the field for the Bowler of the Year honors on the boys side.
Ouellette was not the top qualifier after the 6‐game portion of the event, that honor went to Kyle McGrath (Davison, MI) who shot a big 1342 for his six games. Ouellette was second with 1289 followed by Devin Chalifour (Dearborn Heights, MI) at 1234 and Chase Kaufman (Swartz Creek, MI) at 1213. Those four would get a bye heading into the first round of bracket eliminations and awaiting the winners in round two.
In round one, a couple of the lower seeds knocked out the higher seeds with Antar Howard (Kalamazoo, MI) and Trevor Morgan (Kalamazoo, MI) taking out their higher seeded opponents. Brad Delmarle (Warren, MI) and Kyle Lewis (Lansing, MI) advanced as the higher seeds in their matches as well to round two. Delmarle and Howard once again upset the apple card by knocking out the higher seed in their matches with Ouellette and Kaufman advancing into round three with wins as well.
In the semi‐finals, it was Ouellette and Kaufman ending the day for the two upstart lower seeds as Ouellette knocked out Howard (431‐371) while Kaufman defeated Delmarle (452‐410) to set up the #2 versus #4 final. Ouellette cruised in the finals against Kaufman with a couple of big games and earning his 6th MJMA title winning 513‐424.
On the U20 ladies side of the event, Candyce Bradley (Farmington, MI) led the way after qualifying with a nice 1225 for her 6‐game block. Hannah Ploof (Flint, MI) and Samantha Gainor (Chesterfield, MI) were not too far behind but things change quickly when you head to brackets. Bradley and Ploof earned the first round bye and watched as the four other qualifiers fought to round one wins.
In a couple of close, hard fought matches, it was the two lower seeds, Imari Blond (Flint, MI) and Meghan Macunovich (Canton, MI) winning their ways into round two. In the semi‐finals, Macunovich, the #6 seed, knocked out our top qualifier Bradley with a 399‐392 victory. Ploof advanced to the finals by taking care of business convincingly, knocking out Blond 473‐347. In the finals, it was Ploof taking the lead and holding on to win her first MJMA title with a 372‐352 win over Macunovich.
The U15 division continues to grow, very slowly but it is growing. The event saw five ladies and four boys take part with a couple of impressive new bowlers making their first visits to MJMA. Cameron Klein (Brownstown, MI) led the boys side with a nice 1091 score for his six games while Emilea Sturk (Flint, MI) was the leader on the girls side with a 984 score.
In brackets Klein faced off against Bradley Folks (Belleville, MI) while Zakarey Geer (Madison Heights, MI) faced off against Jacob Johnson (Redford, MI) for the other spot in the finals. Klein and Geer both took care of business winning their round one matches to set up a #1 versus #2 in the finals. In yet another very close match up, it was Klein getting just enough to edge out Geer with a 310‐303 win to earn his third U15 MJMA title.
The ladies had some very close, hard fought matches as well in their brackets. Sturk edged out #4 seed Katelyn Epperson 292‐288 while #2 seed Madalyn Harden (Canton, MI) defeated #3 seed Samantha Lawson 331‐326. Sturk, a winner already this year on the U15 girls side, tried to make it a fight but it was newcomber Harden that took control of the title match to win 332‐290 and take her first MJMA title.
We also qualified three bowlers for the 2017 IBC Youth Junior Gold Championships to be held in the Greater Cleveland area this coming July. Those advancing were Chase Kaufman, Joe Alvord and Meghan Macunovich. Congratulations to all three and best of luck at the championship event.
The next event is the very well anticipated Brunswick Adult – Junior event to be held at Royal Scot Lanes in Lansing, Michigan on November 12‐13. Qualifying will begin at 12:00PM on Saturday and those advancing to match play will be back on Sunday at 9:0AM for the finals portion of the event.
