Michigan Junior Masters Association kicked off the second half of the 2016‐17 season at a new venue, Five Star Lanes in Sterling Heights, Michigan. Rick Moceri and his staff rolled out a red carpet for our first time at the center and nearly 100 bowlers came to challenge their skills on the 38 foot sport pattern.

Scoring pace was a little lower than expected but Taylor Davis (Davison, MI) and Ryan Winters (Livonia, MI) found their way to the top after the 8‐game qualifiers shooting 1482 and 1703 respectively. In the U15 division, yes we have a U15 division, it was Emilia Sturk (Flint, MI) and newcomer Abery Thomas III (Sterling Heights, MI) who led with 1286 and 1466 going into the Sunday match-play portion of the event.

Davis continued to lead the way after the 8‐game match-play and held the number one spot for the five person stepladder portion. Candyce Bradley (Farmington, MI), Jenna Nottle (Macomb, MI), Alexandria Smigiel (Clinton Twp., MI) and Allison Morris (Ypsilanti, MI) rounded out the field. Morris rolled a big game in the first match against Smigiel and moved on with a 247‐188 win. Morris continued her roll in match two against Nottle with a 202‐183 win to advance to the semi‐finals match against Bradley.

The streak would end there, however, as Bradley pulled out a nice 215‐200 win to move on the the championship finals. In a tight and well contested final, it was Davis getting just the few pins more she needed to take home her 8th MJMA title with a 217‐212 victory.

Winters did not fair as well on the boys side though as he watched his top spot vanish as Alex Ouellette was winning 11 of 12 matches and averaging 212+ to take the top spot away going into stepladders. Chad Stephen (Flint, MI) wound up second with Winters third. Rounding out the top five were Jordan Bryant (Detroit, MI) and Morman Baldwin (Alto, MI).

Baldwin took advantage of the added bonus pins, winning 10 of 12 matches, to take the fifth spot by 30 pins and then took advantage of Bryant in the first match 214‐199 and advanced to face Winters. Winters was looking to get that top spot back and showed it in the match winning 235‐146 to advance to take on Stephen. Winters again posted another big game and advanced to the finals by beating Stephen 248‐207. In what has become a very common occurrence in the Boys Finals, Winters and Ouellette faced off once again. Ouellette was not going to let the top spot fade easily and when the dust settled at the end of the match, Ouellette came out on top 201‐172 for his 8th MJMA title and his 5th title this season.

The U15 division saw a good showing with 6 ladies and 5 boys competing in the event. The top four after the eight game qualifying advanced to bowl match play on Sunday. Sturk continued to hold the lead after the six game match play and would face newcomer Samantha Timm (Flint, MI) in the one game championship. Timm averaged nearly 179 for her matchplay side and continued to show why she made a jump up the leader board as she rolled a nice 199 game to defeat Sturk who rolled 147.

The Boys U15 field saw Thomas III maintain his hold on the top spot but Zakarey Geer (Madison Heights, MI) made his way to second place and would face Thomas III in the finals. Geer got in gear in the title match as he rolled a 230 to capture his first MJMA U15 title by downing Thomas III 230‐193.

We also crowned four new Junior Gold qualifiers as Taylor Davis, Chad Stephen, Allison Robbins and Jacob Johnson all earned tickets to Cleveland for the IBC Youth Junior Gold Championships in July of 2017. Congratulations to all our winners and best of luck at the national tournament.
