It only took 31 event and a little over two years but Antar Howard (Kalamazoo, MI) broke through for his second MJMA title in Bridgeport on Saturday, April 22, 2017. Howard last won in August of 2014 at Plaza Lanes in Plymouth, MI and had made numerous runs at another title but fell short until this event.

Howard came from the #4 seed in the bracket format and defeated Jeffrey Liszewski II (Woodhaven, MI) and Sam Brandt (Fremont, MI) before setting a finals match with Jordan Nunn (Flint, MI). Nunn had worked his way to the finals from the #2 seed by defeating Robbie McKInnon (Birch Run, MI) and Kyle Lewis (Lansing, MI) to get him to the finals.

Howard started the finals strong in the two game, total pins format by opening up a big lead shooting a 224 game. He continued the pace in game two with a 255 game and quickly ended the hopes for Nunn to win his second title.

The girls side saw Candyce Bradley (Farmington, MI) start at the #6 seed but she dispatched the #3 seed Alexandria Smigiel (Clinton Twp, MI) in round one and then knocked off the #2 seed Taylor Davis (Burton, MI) in round two to get to the finals. Her opponent, Samantha Gainor (Chesterfield, MI) worked her way from the #4 seed with wins over Keri Molloy (Sandusky, MI) and Bailey Gipson (Davison, MI) to reach the finals.

Bradley took control early in the finals by shooting 248 in the opening game and took a 100+ pin advantage into game two. Gainor fought back in the second game and closed the gap in half but it was not enough as Bradley claimed her fourth MJMA title and second win in a row at our events.

The U15 divisions were well represented at the event as well with four girls and four boys making it to the match play portion of the event. Christopher Clark (Bay City, MI) qualified second and then won his first match against Luke Dalman (Portland, MI) to advance to the finals. His opponent, Kenneth Raynes (Westland, MI) qualified #4 but defeated the top seed Zakarey Geer (Madison Hts, MI) in round one to advance to the finals against Clark.

In what proved to be a very close and exciting match, Clark opened up a narrow 3 pin lead after game one with a 162‐159 advantage. Game two however, saw both bowlers find their mark as each shot 235 in game two and giving Clark his first MJMA U15 title.

The ladies saw Katelyn Epperson (Ypsilanti, MI) win her opening match from the #3 seed to advance to the finals against the #4 seed Riley Meade (Chesterfield, MI) who had knocked out the top seed Anna Maxwell (Westland, MI) in round one.

Meade, who had won the event previous in Plymouth, took an early advantage in game one with a 152‐148 score but Epperson hung in there as the lane conditions continued to toughen up and she came all the way back to win game two 142‐124 and earned her first MJMA U15 ladies title.

I want to thank the folks at Candlelite Bowl in Bridgeport. They have hosted MJMA for many years and each time we come back it is a very pleasant experience for everyone. The next event will be at Galaxy Lanes in Grand Blanc, MI on May 6th. Bowling starts at 9:30AM with check in beginning at 8:00AM. This is another one‐day event so you will have 6 games of qualifying and bracket match play about 30 minutes after the cut names are announced.

Remember, the Daniel C. Ottman Scholarship applications are due to us no later than May 20th in Grand Rapids. Every MJMA member is eligible for this $1,000.00 award but you have to get your applications in. I will be sending the completed applications to the judges on Monday, May 22nd so any applications received after that time wil not be considered. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Jerry Tarabek at [email protected] or by calling 616-780‐2095.
