The Michigan Junior Masters Association rolled into its annual regular season opening event at Lodge Lanes in Belleville, Michigan. The Goike family rolled out the red carpet for the 31st time in our history and they did a fantastic job as hosts once again. The Junior Gold pattern from the U20 Ladies final proved to be a challenge for many of our members but a number of them quickly figured out a line and the scoring climbed near the end of qualifying.

David Northouse (Byron Center, MI) led the U20 boys through the 6 games of qualifying with a tremendous 1464 total while Kendyl Hofmeister (Essexville, MI) led the way for the ladies U20 with a nice 1204 total. Brackets filled with 16 boys and 8 ladies for the two game, total pins, single elimination part of the event. In round one for the boys, two of the higher seeds, including Northouse as the top qualifier, were put to the sidelines as eight survived to go into round two. Round two saw three of the higher seeds once again get ousted as #2 Ryan Winters (Livonia, MI), #3 Gabriel Cassise (Taylor, MI) and #4 Tyler Kolassa (Center Line, MI) fell to the sidelines.

In the semi finals it was #8 seed Brad Delmarle (Warren, MI) posting a 438 for his two game to take out #5 seed Dillon McArthur (Davison, MI) who shot a 418 for his two games. In the other semi final it was #11 seed Chase Kaufman (Swartz Creek, MI) ousting #7 seed Cody Johnston (Sandusky, MI) by a score of 394‐323 to set up the final with Delmarle. Kaufman continued his improbable charge from the #11 seed and took the finals match over Delmarle 402‐359 and captured his first MJMA title.

The U20 ladies saw a lot of the same results as the guys did as three of the top four seeds, including Hofmeister, were eliminated in round one of the brackets. Julia Huren (Westland, MI), the #2 seed, was the only higher seed to advance to round two. Huren continued to move on in round two as she defeated #6 seed Kaylee Johnson (Davison, MI) 431‐369. In the other semi final it was #5 seed Imari Blond (Flint, MI) ousting #8 seed Taylor Davis (Burton, MI) 372‐371. In the finals match Blond took control early and held on as Huren made a late charge to win her first MJMA title 438‐410.

The U15 boys saw David Schaberg (Holt, MI) lead the way through qualifying with a 1149 total for his six games while Anna Maxwell (Westland, MI) took the top spot for the U15 girls with a 1050 six game total. In the brackets for the boys, four advanced to face-off and the top two seeds, Schaberg and Ian Cain (Livonia, MI) made it through to advance to the championship finals. Schaberg took over early and raced away with a big first game and then cruised in game two to victory to earn his second MJMA title 460 – 287 over Cain.

The U15 ladies had something happen that I don’t think has happened before as Cheyenne Washington (Orion Twp, MI) failed to show for the championship final and that handed the championship to Anna Maxwell who shot 334 for her two games in the final to take her first MJMA title. Washington being new to MJMA later explained they did not know she had made the finals and left figuring that her scores would not hold up. Lesson learned!

The next event will be a two day event in Clarkston, MI at the place where this whle thing started 32 years ago, Cherry Hill Lanes North. Greg Gumtow and Jim Kuhla always play great hosts and we are looking forward to getting things started on Saturday, August 26th with an 11:00AM start for qualifying. The bowlers qualifying for match play will be back on Sunday, August 27th for a 9:00AM start to head to head competition, culminating with step ladder finals match ups.

We look forward to seeing everyone in Clarkston for our first two day event of the season. If you have any questions please contact Jerry Tarabek at (616) 780‐2095 or by email at [email protected]
