Michigan Junior Masters Association rolled into Richfield Lanes just outside of Flint, MI on October 7-8th for our third time and the Teuber family once again played fantastic hosts once again this time around. The 74 members who came to bowl attacked the sport pattern that was laid out and the scoring was very competitive. The U20 ladies division saw Imari Blond (Flint, MI) lead the way after the eight games of qualifying with a fantastic 1619 score. Blond held her lead after the eight games of match play and took the number one seed going into the step ladders. Alexis Roof (Flint, MI), Kendyl Hofmeister (Essexville, MI) and Macailin Rodriguez (Kentwood, MI) all joined Blond in the stepladders, all looking to take home the championship. Rodriguez defeated Hofmeister in the first match 184-164 and then topped Roof in game two 195-189 to set a finals match with Blond. In what ended up being a very tight match, Blond carried enough strikes to vault her to her fourth straight win with a 198-192 victory over Rodriguez. The boys U20 division saw Jordan Nunn, a Flint native, take command from the start by leading the event as the high qualifier, first after match play and number one seed into the stepladder finals. However, four other guys were looking to knock off Nunn in the winner move on stepladders. Norman Baldwin (Alto, MI) knocked off first time stepladder performer Logan Hoyt (Burtchville, MI) in the first match 224-156 but Tyler Kolassa (Center Line, MI) ended Baldwins day in game two 242-176. Chad Stephen (Flint, MI) returned the favor and ended Kolassa’s day in game three 236-201 and set up an all Flint final versus Nunn. The championship match was back and forth all the way until the tenth frame when Nunn closes out the match and earned his second MJMA title with a 231-223 win over Stephen. The U15 boys saw the usual list of contenders at the top of the scoring list as David Schaberg (Holt, MI) led the event through qualifying and through matchplay to earn the number one seed. Brendan Ashley (Davison, MI) and Jacob Johnson (Redford, MI) rounded out the stepoladder and met in game one. Johnson took control of the match early and never let up and took the first match 200-154 over Ashley. The championship match, however, proved to be a little tougher scoring. Schaberg was keeping things clean while Johnson saw his share of trouble. In the end, Schaberg filled more frames along the way to earning his third MJMA U15 title with a 173-137 victory. The U15 ladies final saw a match up of three time winner Anna Maxwell (Westland, MI) against Cheyenne Washington (Orion Twp, MI) who was looking for her first MJMA U15 title. They both took turns filling frames throughout the match but Washington had a little more at the end and captured her first title 192-181 over Maxwell. We also landed a number of Junior Gold qualifiers from this event that will move on and represent MJMA in the IBCX Youth Junior Gold Championships in Dallas, Texas in July. Bailey Gipson, Jordan Nunn, Joey Novick and Cheyenne Washington all earned their spots for the national event, congratulations to all. Our next event will be in a few weeks as we invade the confines of Airport Lanes in Jackson, Michigan for a one day event on October 28th. Qualifying will be a 6 game total starting at 9:00AM with qualifiers moving on to two‐game, single elimination brackets approximately 30 minutes after qualifying. This will be a Junior Gold buy‐in event so anyone interested in earning a spot for Dallas can enter. The U20 cost is $40.00 while the U15 entry is $25.00. Looking forward to a good field and another tough test in Jackson. See everyone in a few weeks.
