The Michigan Junior Masters Association headed into Airport Lanes in Jackson, Michigan for our annual trip but this year was very different than in years past. There was a very somber feel to the event with the news just a few days beforehand that our long time board member and youth bowling advocate, Wes Gibson, had passed away. Wes was a pioneer in many ways for bowling in the West Michigan area and was instrumental in many of our youth bowlers getting to the levels they had risen to. He was always there to pass out suggestions and a helping hand for the bowlers as well as the board and he will be greatly missed going forward.

As a result of Wes’s passing, we have decided to dedicate an annual event in the West Michigan area to honor his legacy. The first such event was this one in Jackson at Airport Lanes, the first Annual Wes Gibson Memorial.

With the competition beginning on the challenging 43 foot pattern, a number of bowlers found their way clear and navigated some good six game totals. Ryan Winters (Livonia, MI) led the U20 boys side with a fine 1307 followed by Jordan Nunn (Flint, MI) at 1283 and Chad Stephen (Flint, MI) at 1217. Those three led a field of 12 U20 boys going into bracket match play.

The first round saw three of the higher seeds advance to round two and the same was said for round two with Nunn, the number 2 seed, being the casualty in round two. In the semi‐finals it was Justin O’Shaughnessy, the #4 seed, taking out the top seed Winters with a 445‐415 two game total. In the other semi‐final, Stephen, the #3 seed, threw up a big number and advanced to the finals by defeating Norman Baldwin (Alto, MI) the #7 seed, 472‐376.

In the finals, Stephen took a 3 pin lead after game one but O’Shaughnessy was still in the hunt. In a tough fought game two, it was Stephen coming through in the end to capture his very first MJMA title with a 456‐434 victory.

The ladies where looking to match the excitement of the boys and they did not disappoint. Eight ladies advanced to the bracket round led by Jordynn Matheson (Flushing, MI) who shot 1128 for her six games. However, in round one of match play only one higher seed, #3 Callie Richardson‐Fuller (Davison, MI) made it through to round two. Richardson‐Fuller then eliminated Makayla Lancioni (New Hudson, MI) in round two while Kendyl Hofmeister (Essexville, MI) was taking care of business in the other semi‐final by beating out Kalee Johnson (Davison, MI) to earn her way into the finals.

Both ladies were looking for their first MJMA titles and Richardson‐Fuller looked to have the upper hand when she scored a 29 pin lead after game one. Hofmeister, however, was not done yet and she proceeded to post a 254 score in game two to overtake Richardson‐Fuller 417‐365 and take home her first MJMA title.

The boys U15 division saw its share of great bowling as well. David Schaberg (Holt, MI) posted the third highest qualifying score, in all divisions, with a 1239 for his six games to lead the boys into brackets. The first round saw the top seeds each win with Jacob Johnson (Redford, MI) and Kyle Pranger (Rockford, MI) each advancing to the semi‐finals.

The top seeds held serve in the semi‐finals as well as both Schaberg and Carter Milasinovich (Macomb, MI) each advanced to set up a #1 versus #2 seed in the finals. Milasinovich took a small 10 pin lead out of game one but Schaberg found his stroke in game two and cruised to a big 233 game and won the match 394‐327 to earn his fourth U15 Boys MJMA title.

The U15 ladies saw Kadence Bottrall (Door, MI) hold the top spot after the qualifying round with a 993 six game score but in round one of brackets she ran into a buzz saw in Anna Maxwell (Westland, MI) who shot and impressive 410 for her two games to advance to the finals. The other semi‐final saw the #2 seed Emilea Sturk (Flint, MI) bowl two consistent games to edge out the #3 seed Omani Morales (Cedar Springs, MI) 352‐336. The finals saw Maxwell continue her high level on the lanes as she posted another 400+ total and cruised into her 4th MJMA U15 title with a 409‐345 win over Sturk.

We also qualified five bowlers to represent MJMA at the IBC Youth Junior Gold National Tournament in Dallas, Texas this coming July. Justin O’Shaughnessy, Zackary Timm, Callie Richardson‐Fuller, Zackary Sisk and Emilea Sturk all received their entries into the tournament from our event in Jackson.

Our next event is the annual Adult – Junior Doubles event at Royal Scot Lanes in Lansing, MI. This year’s event will be on November 18‐19th with qualifying on Saturday, November 18th starting at Noon. The top teams who make it to match play will then be back on Sunday, November 19th to bowl starting at 9:00AM. If there are any youth bowlers looking for partners, please contact Jerry Tarabek. I do have a number of both men and women who would lie to bowl with a youth partner.

Thank you to all our sponsors and don’t forget, your new shirts can be ordered directly from EFX by going to the MJMA website and clicking on the EFX logo. That takes you to a dedicated area for MJMA members only to be able to order shirts. New shirt selections are also being considered and could be up there soon.
