The Michigan Junior Masters Association landed at our annual stop at Galaxy Lanes in Grand Blanc, Michigan and once again Ken Hochstein and all the staff at Galaxy Lanes put out the welcome mat for us. This was the 27th time we have been in Grand Blanc and always look forward to coming back each year.

Chase Kaufman pulled off something that no one else has done in recent history on the U20 Boys side as he won his second MJMA title coming from the alternate position. Kaufman was added to the field when Kyle McGrath had to withdraw from the event heading into the bracket matchplay portion of the event. Kaufman came from behind in the first match against Antar Howard 403‐399 to advance to round two and then proceeded to knock out the #4 seed Mitchell Rusinek 413‐382. His day and challenges were not done yet though as he stopped the #1 seed Chad Stephen in round three 420‐402 and in the finals knocked off 13 time champion and #2 seed Ryan Winters 420‐382 to earn his second title.

The U20 Ladies saw some really good matches as well. Round one went as planned with the top four seed all advancing. Round two had the #1 seed Kailee Tubbs advance over Heidi Seeley (425‐328) but the #2 seed Julia Huren had her day ended by #3 seed Emily Moharter (332‐305). In the finals, Tubbs built an eleven pin advantage going into game two but Moharter found the right line and blazed a 225 game to defeat Tubbs (392‐326) and earn her forst MJMA title.

The U15 division saw some very good matches. The ladies had both the top seeds advance from the semi finals into the finals match with Cheyenne Washington defeating Leila Kahler (347‐323) and Karli Van Duinen taking out Emilea Sturk (379‐338). The finals saw Washington take a three pin lead after game one and she then built on that lead in game two to capture her third MMA title 339‐316.

The U15 Boys had some good matches and then some confusion that ended up deciding final positioning. Carter Milasinovich, the #4 seed, defeated #1 seed David schaberg in the opening round while Isaac Dudla, the #3 seed, took out #2 seed Ken Kloth Jr in the second match. Milasinovich showed his experience in the finals with two solid games to capture his third MJMA title 371‐340. The confusion happened after the matches when it was found that one of the bowlers was not actually a U15 bowler. As a result the standings and points had to be adjusted and that bowler was disqualified from the competition.

This is something we try to avoid, especially with the age restrictions from USBC but this one slipped through the cracks and created this situation. Please remember, in order to participate in the U15 division, a bowler must be 14 or younger as of August 1, 2017. We will be taking steps to insure this does not happen again in the future and to make sure that bowlers in this division are eligible for the division.

Our next event will be the regular season final event at Spectrum Lanes in Grand Rapids, Michigan on May 19th and 20th. This two day event will begin at 12:00PM on Saturday, May 19th with eight games of qualifying and the top qualifiers will come back on Sunday, May 20th to bowl the match play portion of the event and crown our new champions.

The Michiana Challenge Cup team will also be named after this event as the top players in both the guys and girls side in points will have the opportunity to represent MJMA at the annual challenge event. The event this year will be back at Spectrum Lanes on June 29th and 30th. The practice session and pizza party will be on Friday from 6PM to 8PM with the challenge event starting first thing on Saturday morning.

The Daniel C Ottman Scholarship applications are also due on Saturday, May 19th. Please make sure you have all your required information with the application for this $1,000.00 scholarship. Any application that is missing information will be deemed incomplete and not be considered by the independent panel who wil review the applications. You can also qualify by bowling all eleven regular season events. We will have a U20 and a U15 division at Championships this year and the overall field could be approaching 70 or more bowlers.
