Michigan Junior Master Association kicked off the second half of the 2018‐19 season at Richfield Bowl just outside of Flint, Michigan. The turnout was fantastic as 134 bowlers entered the event with a field of 74 U20 boys and 39 U20 ladies headlining the entries. Sagano Steak House sponsored the event again and added scholarship money for the everyone to bowl for.

In the U15 division, six male bowlers and four ladies made the cut to day two of match play and it was a wild ride on both sides. David Schaberg (Holt, MI) moved from fourth in qualifying to take the top seed going into the step ladders while Kyle Pranger (Rockford, MI) and Donald Jacobs (Flat Rock, MI) took the other two spots. Pranger had to battle back from a fast start by Jacobs in match one and got the strike in the tenth frame he needed to advance to the title match against Schaberg. The title match was back and forth through the first eight frames but Pranger struck in the ninth and filled the 10th frame with three strikes to close out Schaberg and win his third MJMA U15 title 221‐201.

The ladies saw a different kind of battle in their final however. Karli Van Duinen (Muskegon, MI) had dominated the field right from the start of the event and held a 300 pin advantage over the number two qualifier Megan Timm (Flint, MI) going into the one‐game finals. Van Duinen had opened a 20 pin lead after five frames but then things took a turn. Timm caught up thanks to her filling frames and Van Duinen running into open frame issues. Timm missed a single pin spare in the tenth which gave Van Duinen a chance to win the match by getting a mark and a good count in her tenth. Van Duinen got her mark with a spare and then needed at least 8 pins but a sharp break on the back end left her with a five count on the fill ball and gave the win to Timm 142‐139, Timm’s very first MJMA win.

The U20 division saw its share of twists as well as both of the alternate players got into the field for the Sunday match play portion of the title. Not uncommon for an alternate to get into the field but to have both get in is realy rare. On the guy’s side, a newcomber, Anthony Thibodreaux‐Kaminski (Wayne, MI) led the field after qualifying in his very first event, edging out Chad Stephen (Flint, MI) by three pins. In the match play portion, however, the newcomber showed his nerves and dropped out of the top five to not make the step ladders.

Jeffrey Lizewski II ( Woodhaven, MI) took out Kyle Lewis (Lansing, MI) in the first match 199‐161 but in match two Lizewski found the going tougher and lost to the third seed Mitchell Rusinek (Canton, MI) 192‐ 149. Rusinek faced Antar Howard (Kalamazoo, MI) in the next match and found himself down by 20 going into the eighth frame but tightened the match up in the tenth only to see Howard throw the strike he needed in the tenth to take the match 228‐218 in a match that saw both bowlers bowl clean games. In the finals, Howard opened a 20 pin lead by the fifth frame over the number one seed Justin O’Shaughnessy (Canton, MI) and never looked back as he won his third MJMA title 196‐158.

The U20 ladies had good competition all the way through the event but Imari Blond (Flint, MI) led after qualifying and match play and took the number one spot going into step ladders. Victoria Giardina (Shelby Twp., MI) jumped from 6th in qualifying to 5th after match play and started stepladders against Bailey Gipson (Davison, MI) who moved from 7th to 4th after matchplay. Th ematch was pretty even until Gipson struck in the eighth and ninth to edge out Giardina 172‐170.

IN match two, Gipson struggled to find the strikes she needed but Meghan Macunovich (Canton, MI) was having her own issues with opens in the 7th & 8th frames. Gipson needed a strike on her first ball in the tenth to take the match but a nine count ended her day and move Macunovich to the semi‐finals. Alexandria Smigiel (Clinton Twp., MI) was making her first apperance in MJMA in a while and she opened a 25 pin lead through five frames and continued to stretch the lead as she won the match to advance to the finals 225‐179 over Macunovich. Smigiel took a 10 pin lead over Blond through 6 frames but Blond finished strong with coverting a split in the 8th frame and then filling the 9th and 10th frame with strikes to win the match 213‐202 and earn her 5th MJMA title.
